Habib Beye faces three early tests at Marseille, starting with Brest trip | OneFootball

New Marseille head coach Habib Beye struck a combative tone in his first press conference on Thursday, with his debut at Brest on Friday at 20:45 in Ligue 1 matchday 23. According to Le Progres, the former defender faces immediate tests on and off the pitch.

OM’s bond with supporters has frayed, as seen in last week’s 2-2 draw with Strasbourg when fans left the stands early and unfurled banners against the board. Beye’s popularity as a former captain, 174 appearances from 2003 to 2007, could help if results turn. He said the team must feel and embody the city.

Scepticism remains over his limited experience and Rennes’ streaky record, which swung from long winning runs to deep slumps. He must decide whether to stick with, or move away from, the three-five-two used at Rennes. His teams have often started fast, with Red Star opening at three wins, one draw and one defeat, scoring 18 and conceding five, and Rennes beginning with four wins and one defeat, eight scored and two against.

Brest have lacked consistency this season, though they beat Lorient 2-0 then drew 1-1 at Lille. The reverse fixture in November, under Roberto De Zerbi, ended 3-0 at the Vélodrome, with goals by Angel Gomes, Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. At Brest, OM have won four of their last six visits, with one draw and one defeat.

Beye has a near full squad, except suspended defender Leonardo Balerdi. A win would keep Marseille in touch with Lyon, third, who visit next. Shoring up an unconvincing defence will be urgent, given his Rennes side had Ligue 1’s fifth-worst record.
