Olympique de Marseille were knocked out of the Coupe de France by Toulouse on Wednesday night. According to GetFootballNewsFrance.com, Habib Beye said Ethan Nwaneri and Leonardo Balerdi were the players most affected by the defeat.
The quarter-final at the Vélodrome saw OM lead twice. Mason Greenwood put them ahead, then Igor Paixao restored the lead after an equaliser. Each time Toulouse replied quickly, and the tie went to penalties.
Toulouse advanced in the shoot-out after Nwaneri sent the decisive kick over the bar. Balerdi had already missed, leaving Marseille on the back foot.
Beye has faced criticism for assigning the final penalty to Nwaneri, who is on loan from Arsenal. He said he would not debate that decision, praised the youngster’s willingness to take responsibility, and noted the pecking order was clear. He added that the two who missed were feeling it the most.
The exit stung more given Paris Saint-Germain’s early, shock elimination by Paris FC, which had opened up the competition. There had been a sense Marseille’s 14-year wait for silverware could end.
