Barcelona’s preparations for a crucial European night have taken an unexpected hit, with Frenkie de Jong unlikely to return in time for the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Atletico Madrid.

The Dutch midfielder’s recovery has not progressed as initially hoped, and sources indicate that his comeback is now being targeted for the domestic clash against Espanyol instead. 

This development leaves Barcelona manager Hansi Flick facing a genuine selection dilemma at a critical stage of the season.

With fixture congestion beginning to pile up, Flick’s challenge is not just about replacing de Jong, but also ensuring the squad remains physically balanced for the demanding run ahead.

One constant in the equation is Pedri, who is expected to anchor one of the pivot roles in midfield. 

However, the situation has been further complicated by the absence of Marc Bernal, who had been steadily establishing himself before suffering an ankle issue last weekend.

What are Flick’s options?

This double setback significantly narrows Flick’s options and in that regard, the primary candidates to partner with Pedri now include Eric Garcia, Marc Casado, and potentially Gavi.

On paper, Garcia appears to be the most logical solution, as Flick has already trusted him in a similar role.

His versatility has been a valuable asset, especially earlier in the season before Bernal’s emergence.

Moreover, with Jules Kounde fully fit and the likes of Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin settling well in defence, Flick is not under immediate pressure to deploy Garcia at the back.

That said, his performance in midfield last weekend raised some concerns, as he did not look entirely comfortable operating as a pivot, which opens the door for alternative solutions.

What about Casado and Gavi?

Casado, although reliable, has seen extremely limited minutes this season, making him a slightly risky option in such a high-stakes encounter. 

Meanwhile, Gavi offers intensity and tactical intelligence, but the Spaniard is still regaining full match sharpness after his recent injury and has yet to start a game consistently.

Ultimately, it will be a test of Flick’s tactical flexibility and trust in his squad depth. 

With so much on the line against Atletico, every decision will carry weight.
