Following a busy international break, with Raphinha flying back from Brazil duty and Lewandowski starting two games in quick succession for Poland, Flick kept them on the bench from the off.

Raphinha replaced Roony Bardghji at half time and made an instant impact as Lewandowski came on for Ferran Torres for the last 20 minutes and still scored twice.

That opens the veteran striker’s account for 2025/26, after an injury disrupted start to the season, and Torres spot is under fresh threat.

The Spain international impressed as cover for Lewandowski, and he already two league goals from three games this season, but Lewandowski’s return to fitness should mean a switch.

However, Flick insisted the ‘problem’ is a positive for him, ahead of a busy run of games in La Liga the UEFA Champions League.

“From the beginning, we showed what we wanted to do, and that’s what we’ve seen from the team,” as per Marca.

“The team has been fantastic in every position. The three points are perfect, and for me it’s great to have to choose between Ferran and Lewandowski.

“Raphinha has a top mentality. It was a technical decision not to start him. There will be games for everyone. Raphinha and Araujo were coming back off a long journey.”

Flick also opted against further comment over Lamine Yamal’s injury absence after his critique over Spain’s handling of the 18-year-old.
