Hansi Flick is entering his third season at Barcelona with a noticeably stronger grip on internal decision-making.

The German coach, once viewed as a consensus-builder, has recently demonstrated a far more demanding approach as he looks to impose his vision on every aspect of the club’s sporting structure, reports Javi Miguel of AS.

Flick made it clear to the club’s sporting leadership that he wanted a change in the physical preparation department and expected the matter to be resolved before pre-season began.

The decision caught some within the club by surprise, particularly because Tous had strong backing from influential figures close to the Barcelona hierarchy.

Nevertheless, Flick remained firm and was unwilling to reconsider his position, ultimately leading to Tous being reassigned away from first-team duties.

According to the report, Tous will now oversee a performance-focused project linked to Barcelona’s academy and other sporting sections rather than continue with the senior squad.

Growing concerns over physical preparation

The tension between Flick and Tous is believed to have developed gradually throughout the season.

One key turning point came following repeated injury setbacks suffered by Raphinha during his recovery process as he attempted to return for an early-season El Clasico.

Those complications led Flick to alter the club’s rehabilitation methods, reducing the influence of the fitness department and placing greater control in other areas of the recovery process.

The move effectively undermined Tous’ role and highlighted a growing difference in philosophy between the two men.

As the season progressed, Flick is understood to have voiced concerns about whether Barcelona’s physical conditioning levels were sufficient to compete consistently with Europe’s elite sides in the latter stages of the Champions League.

Attention turns to Tous’ successor

Barcelona must now decide who will lead the first team’s physical preparation programme going forward. One name linked to the role has been Holger Broich, a trusted figure from Flick’s time at Bayern Munich.

However, club officials have cooled speculation around that possibility, indicating that they would prefer someone with greater familiarity with the club’s existing structure and environment.

The next appointment could provide another indication of how much influence Flick now wields behind the scenes.

What is already clear is that the German coach is no longer simply adapting to Barcelona. He is increasingly shaping the club according to his own standards and expectations, and he appears prepared to challenge established structures if he believes changes are necessary.
