Harrison Jones has left Sunderland for Peterborough United on a three-year deal, the 21-year-old marking his exit with a gracious message. Sunderland Echo understands he has joined on a free transfer, with a sell-on clause attached.

Jones joined Sunderland at six, rose through the Academy of Light and made seven senior appearances. On Instagram he expressed delight at joining Posh, called them a big club and thanked Sunderland for 15 years.

Team-mates soon responded, with Luke O’Nien wishing him well, Chris Rigg and Trai Hume offering good-luck messages and Dan Neil replying with a red heart.

The switch offers Jones the chance of regular senior football after time around Sunderland’s first team and under-21s last season. He was named on the bench for several Premier League fixtures during 2026, including against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.

As the deal was completed, Jones said it came together quickly and that leaving after so long was difficult, but it was the right time to play. He called himself a versatile midfielder used in different roles, and stressed signing before pre-season, noting there are many big clubs in League One.

His exit comes amid a summer reset of Sunderland’s academy and under-21s pathway under Florent Ghisolfi. The club have moved to protect value on youngsters, triggering extensions for Zak Johnson and Timur Tutierov, appointed John Hewitson as academy manager, and Graeme Murty is set to leave as under-21s lead.
