England captain thrilled with ‘massive fight and result’ as former club Spurs swerve relegation on final day
Harry Kane has congratulated Tottenham and their fans after they avoided relegation from the Premier League on a dramatic final day of the season.
Joao Palhinha’s late first-half goal sealed a 1-0 home win for Spurs over Everton that was enough to see them retain their top-flight status and condemn rivals West Ham to a first return to the Championship since 2012, despite the latter’s 3-0 victory over Leeds at the London Stadium.
It was a joyful end to an otherwise truly abject campaign for Tottenham as they successfully averted a disastrous first demotion from the top-flight of English football for almost 50 years.
Though everybody connected with Spurs knows ultimately that avoiding relegation is nothing to shout about for a club of their stature, there was nevertheless an outpouring of joy and relief as head coach Roberto De Zerbi celebrated what he described as the “biggest achievement” of his managerial career to date.
Former Tottenham stars have been quick to offer their congratulations to the current crop for eventually steering the club away from danger, with Kane the most prominent among those voices on social media.
“Congratulations to everyone at the club especially the fans - massive fight and result on the final day!” wrote the England captain on Sunday evening via his official X account.
Kane is one of Tottenham’s biggest icons and their all-time leading scorer, having notched 280 goals in 435 total appearances across all competitions for the club between 2009-23, before leaving for German giants Bayern Munich in an £86million transfer three years ago.
It was a successful weekend for Kane as well as Spurs, with the prolific striker netting a hat-trick against Stuttgart in the DFB Pokal final on Saturday as reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern clinched a league and cup double.
It was the fourth major trophy of his Bayern career so far for Kane, who famously never won any silverware during his 14-year first-team tenure at Spurs.
He scored an incredible 61 goals in 51 appearances for Vincent Kompany’s side this term, meaning he will head into this summer’s World Cup finals in North America with England in phenomenal form.
