FC Bayern underlined their impressive early-season form in Cyprus on Tuesday night. With the comfortable 5-1 victory over Pafos FC in the league phase of the Champions League, the Bavarians sealed a ninth win in their ninth competitive match of the season.
“It was a really good win,” said brace scorer Harry Kane after the victory in Limassol, while head coach Vincent Kompany stressed, despite the scoreline, “that we had to fight hard especially in the second half”. fcbayern.com has gathered the rest of the post-match reaction for you.
Vincent Kompany: “I was sure that Pafos won’t be easy opponents at home – and it wasn’t as easy as it looks. Especially in the second half, we had to fight hard to stabilise the game. Then we became more and more dangerous again. We handled it well. We trust all the players we have, which is why we use them all. We’ll carry on doing that. My priority is that we continue to perform. Everything we achieve is only achieved through our team. I have 100 percent faith in every player in my squad. I hope the people in Cyprus saw how much respect we had, how we pressed and ran. Now we’re well under way in the Champions League and focusing on the next tasks, like we did today.”
Joshua Kimmich: “In the end it’s a 5-1 win at Pafos. Obviously we were favourites but in terms of the performance, everything was as it should be. I thought the first half was very good. We weren’t as forceful in the second, particularly straight after the break. Nevertheless, I think Pafos will pick up the odd point at home. Even though it didn’t look like it in the first half, they can be awkward and I don’t think they’ll stay on one point. It’s still early in the season but we’re top of the table – at least for the moment. That’s also down to performances like this and the goal difference. Our aim is clear: we want to avoid the play-offs, unlike last season. Of course, we’ve seen that you can still win the title via the play-offs, as Paris did. But it’s certainly better if you can avoid it because otherwise you might meet a top team straight away.”
Harry Kane: “It was a good away win. Last year we struggled away from home in the league phase, so this time we wanted to build on the momentum we’ve had since the start of the season – especially after the Chelsea game too. It was a really good win. And for me, I’m going into games with the confidence that I’ll get chances. I managed to take another two of them today. Of course, every striker would like to stay on and get the third goal, but I know we have a lot of games and the coach is trying to keep everyone fresh. Nicolas Jackson started today. At times I dropped back a bit, more like a ten, and he came in and received the balls. I think it’s important to keep surprising defenders and not do the same thing all match. Nico was fantastic today: a goal, an assist and almost another goal at the end. I’m very pleased for him. We’ll need him all season, hopefully he stays fit and fresh – it was a really good performance from him today. It maybe looked easy but that’s down to how we played: with our pressing, the second balls, how we played through the lines. We have this momentum and desperately want to keep it up.”
Nicolas Jackson: “We played very well, pressed high – and ultimately won the game. It wasn’t easy at all. We worked hard but we just had to win. I’m very happy about my first goal. It’s a new start for me, I haven't played for a long time but I'm getting fitter and fitter and trying to get to my best level as soon as possible. It’s hard to say how far I am from my best level. I didn’t play for almost two months, and also trained alone. It’s a process, I’m trying every day to learn and improve myself. I feel very at home after my first few weeks in Munich. Everyone’s welcomed me really well, there are great people here. I’m very happy – and we’ll see what the future brings.”
Juan Carlos Carcedo (coach): “I want to thank the fans who were in the stadium today. We gave a good performance but Bayern are one of the best teams in Europe. We did our best but it wasn’t enough. The effort from the boys was good. We tried until the end. We were better at the start of the second half and put Bayern under some pressure. We want to do better in the next games and get points for our fans.”
