United sealed all three points as they beat Arne Slot’s men 2-1. Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring inside two minutes after Amad expertly slipped him through on goal.

Cody Gakpo restored parity in the 78th minute to set the stage for a ferocious finish, but Maguire had the final say.

The England international towered over Ibrahima Konate to nod in a fantastic ball from Bruno Fernandes. The win marked United’s first at Anfield since 2016.

After the final whistle, Maguire could not hide his delight at beating Liverpool.

The United defender’s contributions have earned him spots in Alan Shearer and Troy Deeney’s Team of the Week selections for the Premier League and BBC respectively.

Maguire rewarded with double recognition

Shearer named Maguire as part of a defensive quartet also consisting of Kyle Walker (Burnley), Josh Acheampong (Chelsea) and Lucas Digne (Aston Villa).

On why he selected Maguire, Shearer explained, “The big man came up with another big goal in a huge performance. An absolute giant in both boxes.”

“Defended superbly to keep Liverpool’s attack at bay and then produced a towering header to seal a memorable win at Anfield.”

Meanwhile, Deeney’s defence consisted of  Maguire, Acheampong, Axel Tuanzebe (Burnley) and Nico O’Reilly (Manchester City).

On Maguire, Deeney stated, “Man of the weekend. He was absolutely unreal in the 2-1 win at Liverpool. How many times has this man been written off, both as a player for England, as a captain for Manchester United?”

“If you listen to everything, he has been the problem apparently, however he was fantastic.”

“A real leader, nothing too fancy and that is what you want from your centre-backs. He was effective and very good.”
