Harry Maguire has been charged with improper conduct by the FA for his words or behaviour towards the fourth official after being sent off against Bournemouth.

The England defender is already going to be suspended for Manchester United’s next match, against Leeds on 13 April, but is now at risk of facing an extended ban that could rule him out of their trip to Chelsea five days later.

Maguire is accused of using abusive or insulting words or behaving incorrectly towards fourth official Matt Donohue.

The 33-year-old had been shown a straight red card by referee Stuart Attwell for pulling back Evanilson, leading to the penalty Junior Kroupi scored in a 2-2 draw.

A statement from the FA read: “Harry Maguire has been charged for improper conduct after being sent off against Bournemouth. It is alleged that he acted in improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behavior towards the fourth official. He has until April 2 to provide a response.”

Maguire, who has been an ever-present in Michael Carrick’s time in charge and has earned a recall to the England team, is close to signing a new contract at Old Trafford.

United could at least have some compensation for his absence against Leeds, with Lisandro Martinez likely to return.

United have submitted a complaint to PGMO about the officiating in the draw at Bournemouth, when they were annoyed they were denied a penalty and Carrick called some of the decisions “baffling”, though he did not object to Maguire’s dismissal.
