Harry Maguire: Fellow Anfield hero revels in defender’s glory | OneFootball

Manchester United pulled off one of their most memorable victories of recent times on Sunday against Liverpool.

Harry Maguire headed home late on to send the United fans into raptures at the away end at Anfield.

The Red Devils managed to weather a late storm and eight minutes of injury time to hold onto a precious three points and secure their first victory at Anfield since 2016.

Praise from former players

Since his goal, Maguire has been highly praised by numerous pundits with Nicky Butt claiming that the club has failed the defender over the years.

One player who knows a little something about late winners at Anfield is former Irish defender John O’Shea.

The Waterford native scored in 2007 right at the death in front of the Kop to give United a narrow 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

The win was even more significant as United had been reduced to ten men after Paul Scholes was sent off. What’s more, the victory also helped propel Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to a first league title in four years.

Fantastic for him

Speaking to Stadium Astro, O’Shea has spoken out on Maguire’s heroic winner.

The former Republic of Ireland international asserted that, “it’s fantastic for him, he was getting ridiculed for long enough.”

He continued, “it’s brilliant. We’ve spoken about the mentality you need, and Harry’s shown it, he’s shown a great resilience to come back and fight his way back into the team.”

O’Shea warned that Maguire and the rest of the team still have much to do if they want to turn around what has been a poor year or so.

O’Shea explained that, “he’s got to carry that on now. Let’s carry that on for a few weeks, a few months, until the New Year. Lots more football to be played and a lot more big battles to come.”
