Leeds United will land in the USA today for a three-game pre-season tour, starting against Wrexham this weekend then Sunderland and Liverpool. It is a chance to sharpen fitness and for four players to stake a claim.

Sean Longstaff’s first year also misfired as a calf problem hit his autumn and rivals, notably Anton Stach, kept him out. He still had moments, including a 97th-minute equaliser at Bournemouth in April, and interest in Shea Charles suggests more midfield depth is sought.

Harry Wilson’s quality is clear, yet adaptation takes time. The 29-year-old should benefit from Wales colleagues and must build understanding with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and with Brenden Aaronson on post-World Cup leave the right flank should be his to lose.
