Manchester City are delighted to announce that Yui Hasegawa has signed a new two-year contract extension on her current deal.

The deal keeps the Japan international, one of the finest midfielders in world football, at the Joie Stadium until the summer of 2029.

Hasegawa joined City in September 2022 from West Ham United and has been included in the PFA WSL Team of the Year in each of her three full seasons at the Joie Stadium.

She’s rapidly approaching 100 appearances for the Club and, to emphasise her importance to the team, only missed four matches across her first three campaigns in sky blue.

Our midfielder was also shortlisted for the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d’Or as well as being named our 2024/25 Etihad Player of the Season by supporters.

Speaking about her new deal, Yui said: “I’m very happy to have signed my contract extension, I’m so excited.

“I’m so excited because we can win the title this season. Because we have great players and a good football style so I hope this season will be good.

“I really want to win the title at this club and there are players I want to play with. This is one of the biggest reasons [why I wanted] to stay here.”

Women’s Director of Football Therese Sjogran added: “We’re absolutely delighted that Yui has agreed to extend her stay at Manchester City with this latest extension.

“She’s one of the world’s best in her position and will be a key part of our quest to compete with the world’s best on a regular basis.

“Yui deserves all the respect and recognition that comes her way, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds with her at the Joie.”

City’s midfield metronome

Hasegawa arrived at City with an impressive reputation but, over the past three seasons, she’s developed into one of world football’s finest midfielders.

Statistics don’t provide a full picture of a players’ stature in the game, but the midfielder has consistently topped the charts at the end of each WSL season while at City.

Last year, for example, she was involved in more shot-ending sequences (125) than any other midfielder and completed the most dribbles in the WSL (36), while only Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey made more successful passes in the opposition half.

Off the ball, she also won possession more than anyone else in the top flight, and more than anyone in the middle third of the pitch.

All of that came with the backdrop of City ultimately enduring a disappointing campaign, riddled by injuries.

But despite the demands placed on a midfielder in the heat of battle and the Japan international’s slight frame, she’s been selected in a remarkable 95 of her 99 possible appearances while at City.

Her consistency is nothing short of remarkable, with Hasegawa’s game reaching new levels at the Joie Stadium.

Having initially featured as a more traditional ‘number six’, the midfielder transitioned into a more advanced role towards the back end of 2024/25, allowing her to boast her remarkable ability on the ball further up the pitch.

It was a subtle tweak but, with German international Sydney Lohmann through the door this summer, it could be a more regular sight heading into 2025/26.

This new campaign marks a fresh chapter in the Club’s history, with a new Head Coach and several exciting signings through the door.

As Hasegawa declared in her interview, the ambition is always to win the league at the start of a new season, with City aiming to bring home silverware for the first time since 2022.

Should we be successful in that objective, the Japan international will surely have played an integral role in it.
