Yui Hasegawa says she’s excited for the upcoming Barclays Women’s Super League after extending her City stay.
The Japan international has penned a two-year year extension on her current deal with the Blues which will keep her at the Joie Stadium until the summer of 2029.
It comes a day before Andrée Jeglertz side kick-off the new campaign with a trip to Chelsea on Friday 5 September.
Across the season, City will be aiming to relentlessly pursue the title and build on our fourth-place finish from 2024/25.
Although Hasegawa is under no illusion of the enormity of the task to life the WSL title, she’s relishing the challenge ahead.
“I’m so excited because we can win the title this season. Because we have great players and a good football style so I hope this season will be good.
“I think we have to keep focused on ourselves and working hard everyday.”
A summer signing from West Ham in 2022, Hasegawa has amassed 95 appearances for City so far while establishing herself as one world football’s finest operators from defensive midfield.
However, she often played in a more advanced role at the Hammers before arriving at the Club and dictating our tempo from deep.
And Hasegawa explained how she’s enjoyed learning and adapting to the role at the Blues.
She added: “I think I’ve developed more defensively so I think my strength is defence now.
“I’m not sure, but when the team is struggling to find the solutions, I have to have solutions in my head and I have to show it in my play.
“I just want to help other players. So maybe I don't have individual strengths, but I can help around me so hopefully I will show it this season.”
Throughout Hasegawa’s time so far she’s stamped her authority on a number of memorable City triumphs.
But her favourite, she revealed, is our famous 2-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League last season.
I think the win against Barcelona in the Champions League. That was also my Champions League debut. So that was my favourite,” she concluded.
