Kai Havertz scored a late penalty to ensure Arsenal go into the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie with Bayer Leverkusen level.
Arsenal trailed for much of the second half after Robert Andrich headed in from a corner straight after the restart.
But substitute Havertz calmly converted from the spot against his former club after Noni Madueke was tripped by Malik Tillman, meaning Arsenal take a 1-1 draw back to the Emirates for the second leg.
Arsenal were well below their best, but could have taken the lead in the first half when Gabriel Martinelli’s powerful effort cannoned back off the crossbar.
The introduction of Madueke after Andrich’s opener gave the Gunners a much needed spark, however, staking his claim to start the second leg in London.
