Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has moved to lavish praise on Blaugrana star Gerard Martín.

This comes owing to the defender’s showing in his side’s La Liga meeting with Deportivo Alavés on Saturday evening.

Barcelona are of course fresh off taking their place back at the summit of the Spanish top-flight table, courtesy of a 3-1 triumph.

En route to as much, the aforementioned Martín featured from the off in the hosts’ backline.

Amid a shortage of options at the disposal of manager Flick, though, Martín was tasked with slotting into a central role at the heart of defence.

Yet, the 23-year-old barely put a foot wrong all evening, impressing on both sides of the ball in an accomplished individual performance.

Post-match, Barca’s headmaster was therefore quick to make clear his appreciation for his under-the-radar defensive star, explaining:

“Gerard Martín always delivers. It’s always good to have a guarantee like Martín to be able to fill the centre-back position.”
