Speculation surrounding the future of Marc Andre Ter Stegen at Barcelona has intensified in recent days, with the long-serving German goalkeeper facing growing uncertainty over his role at the club.
At 33, the veteran shot stopper is no longer guaranteed regular minutes, and a potential exit is now being seriously discussed behind the scenes.
One club that has emerged as a genuine contender is Girona. Interest from the Catalan side is real, and a move is not being ruled out, particularly in the form of a temporary loan.
The situation gained further traction on Monday night when Girona head coach Michel Sánchez was asked about the Barcelona goalkeeper while attending the Gala de les Estrelles, an awards ceremony organised by the Catalan Football Federation.
Michel was present at the event to receive the jury award for his integration into Catalonia. During the ceremony, he was questioned about the rumours linking Girona with Ter Stegen.
As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, the Girona coach made his admiration for the German international clear, although he avoided confirming or denying any negotiations.
“He is a top player. Everyone would like to have a goalkeeper like Ter Stegen.”
The message was clear enough, and it highlighted that even the Girona coach himself would be open to the idea of such a move. With Ter Stegen seeking more playing time, something Barcelona cannot offer due to the presence of Joan Garcia between the posts, Girona could represent an appealing alternative.
For the German goalkeeper, the need for consistent minutes is becoming increasingly important with the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching. A short-term move away from Barcelona could provide the regular football he requires to remain in contention for a starting role with the German national team.
As the winter transfer window approaches, the possibility of a loan move remains open, with Girona closely monitoring developments surrounding one of Barcelona’s most experienced players.
