Heart of Midlothian have fallen at the first hurdle for Champions League qualification, following a 6-0 aggregate defeat to Sturm Graz.

A 4-0 defeat in Austria left The Jam Tart’s with plenty to do in the return leg, but they were unable to overturn the deficit and instead suffered another loss, this time 2-0, with goals coming from Simon Seidl and Emran Soglo, compounding the Scottish side’s misery.

They will now drop into the third round of Europa League qualification, where they will face either SL Benfica of Portugal or St.Galen of Switzerland, depending on the winner of that tie. St.Galen currently maintain a 2-1 lead heading into the second leg in Lisbon.

First of all, though, Wouter Vrancken’s men will get their Scottish Premiership campaign underway with a trip to Aberdeen on Saturday evening.
