Robert Lewandowski said goodbye to FC Barcelona at the end of the last season, bringing down the curtains on an iconic four-year stint at the Catalan club.

The 37-year-old striker’s contract expired and the club opted against offering him an extension, letting him leave as a free agent.

Since his exit was confirmed, there was a lot of speculation about where he will be playing next. There was interest from AC Milan in Italy, while a number of teams in Saudi Arabia were gunning for his signing as well.

Lewandowski chooses Chicago Fire

However, Lewandowski will be moving to the USA as he is set to sign for Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire, confirms Fabrizio Romano.

Indeed the transfer expert has given the operation his trademark ‘Here we go’ , with the Poland striker expected to complete the signing next week.

The MLS outfit had been pushing to sign the veteran centre-forward for some time now, with Gregg Berhalter, the club’s head coach and director of football, making it clear that they sought Lewandowski as one of their marquee signings.

Lewandowski visited Chicago a couple of weeks back to listen to the club’s proposal and take a look at their facilities.

Having taken his time, the 37-year-old striker has finally arrived at a decision and will be signing for Chicago Fire, with the transfer expected to go through next week.

Lewandowski left Barcelona as a legend

Signed from Bayern Munich in 2022, Lewandowski joined Barcelona at a time when the club was going through a difficult phase on and off the field.

His arrival, therefore, was a key milestone and in his very first season, the veteran forward helped Xavi Hernandez & co. win the La Liga title.

While he endured a difficult second campaign at the club, the Pole was back to his best in 2024/25 with Hansi Flick at the helm of affairs.

The last season was one where Lewandowski had some problems with injuries, showing signs of age catching up with him. Nevertheless, he played his part in helping Barça to the third league title in his four years before bidding an emotional goodbye.

Now, Lewandowski will hope to enjoy a successful stint in the MLS with Chicago Fire.
