Sebastian Hoeneß railed at the officiating after Stuttgart’s dramatic draw at Heidenheim, with two VAR interventions central to a fractious night at the Voith-Arena.

According to BuLi News, Stuttgart twice had to recover, from 2-1 and 3-2, before Deniz Undav struck late to salvage a point.

At 1-1 in the first half, Stuttgart believed Ermedin Demirović had put them ahead. VAR halted play and sent it to the other box, where Maximilian Mittelstädt was penalised for a foul on Eren Dinkçi. Arijon Ibrahimović converted the penalty.

“We talked about the game,” Hoeneß said. He called it “heated” and added that “many things happened”. He told DAZN.

“I see the contact, but immediately afterwards Maxi blocks it,” Hoeneß said. “Sorry, guys. To intervene from the sidelines now, which then means we don’t score a goal - that’s unacceptable. I don’t understand it. It’s not enough for me.”

“It’s in slow motion. The right foot makes a block almost simultaneously. That’s a challenge that would never be called in midfield. For me, it’s not a clear and obvious wrong decision.”

After the interval, a further Demirović finish was chalked off for a marginal offside following VAR scrutiny. “That’s tough when you see the graphic,” Hoeneß added.

Undav’s late leveller ensured a point and Stuttgart remain fourth ahead of next weekend’s home game with Wolfsburg. The sense of injustice endures in Hoeneß’s post-match reflections.
