Following their 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich (via @iMiaSanMia), Hoffenheim head coach Christian Ilzer reacted to the first penalty awarded in the game.
The first goal of the game came from a Harry Kane penalty in the 20th minute after Luis Diaz was brought down by TSG defender Kevin Akpoguma.
The awarding of the penalty has been controversial, and despite referee Tobias Stieler defending his decision, it did not stop Ilzer voicing his criticism of the decision:
“A clear wrong decision. There’s no need to discuss it, everyone saw it. There was absolutely no foul. 75,000 people in the stadium were looking forward to a top match here. I feel a bit sorry for them that it turned into this game with one player less”
Hoffenheim have had an eventful past few weeks, not only on the pitch but off it too. There has been talk about sporting director Schicker being demoted and potentially leaving the club, and this could also see Ilzer leave along with his close confidante.
Despite the outside noise, Schicker was also able to offer his opinion on the penalty:
“It’s a pity that a top game was taken away from the fans in the stadium and at home by referee Stieler. In my opinion it was an offensive foul by Díaz. I have no understanding for that. We saw a game where many of the people involved on the pitch on both sides showed a great performance, but one [the referee] was overwhelmed”
