I think fair to say that when Newcastle United fans heard there was a Monday night Premier League match at St James’ Park, not many supporters were very happy with the news.
All thanks to Sky Sports… and all the clubs (including Newcastle United) who are happy to take the money, no matter how unpopular and in many cases difficult it is, for the fans, when it comes to Monday night matches.
So it was with Newcastle v West Ham.
This made all the worse by the fact it was an additional wait after yet another soul-destroying international fortnight.
Looking back (see below), I was surprised to find that this game against the Hammers, would be only the fourth Monday night match at St James’ Park in the Premier League, since December 2012.
As you all know by now, Monday night didn’t go our way.
Hopefully this will be another 28 years before this happens to Newcastle United again.
On 4 March 1996, Newcastle United lost 1-0 at home to Man U, it was a Monday night.
The next 28 years brought 19 more Monday night Premier League matches at St James’ Park, Newcastle United winning 11 of them and drawing another eight of them, zero defeats.
So 28 years 8 months and 21 days after that 1-0 defeat to Man U, NUFC have now lost 2-0 to West Ham.
As I say, hopefully another 28+ years until Newcastle United lose in the Premier League on a Monday night.
As you get older, I am sure that a lot of you also do this thing.
Where you look back at something that happened in the past, something significant, or just a vivid memory of something, good or bad. You then think how many years ago that was, then add those years to your current age and… bloody hell! Yes, so looking back at that 1-0 home defeat on a Monday night, which basically proved to be the match when Newcastle effectively would have made sure of winning the title, even if only drawing, if I now add on another 28 years I have just worked out that I will be into my eighties (if still around…)!
