Celtic’s 3-1 victory over Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Cup final has done far more than complete a domestic double – it has reshaped the entire Premiership’s European picture for next season. As a direct consequence of the Bhoys lifting the cup, Hibernian have secured a place in the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round for 2026/27, with the draw set for Wednesday, June 17. For Hibs, who finished fifth in the Premiership, it’s a lifeline that only existed because Celtic came through at Hampden.
Celtic overcame Dunfermline 3-1 to complete the domestic double, and the significance of that result cascaded immediately down the table. Because the Hoops had already secured Champions League qualification by winning the Premiership title, the Europa League berth attached to the Scottish Cup passed down the league – landing with the Ibrox club, who finished third. That in turn freed up further Conference League places, and suddenly Hibs, sitting fifth, found themselves with European football confirmed.
It’s a mechanism Celtic supporters know well by now. As the wider Premiership landscape shaped up across the campaign, the likelihood of Celtic’s dominance unlocking European routes for others further down the table was always there. When you win the league and the cup, the gift keeps giving – for everyone beneath you.
The mechanics are straightforward once you follow the thread. Celtic – Champions League bound as league winners – can’t also take the cup winner’s Europa League slot. That slot drops to the Ibrox club in third. Motherwell, fourth, take a Conference League berth automatically via their league finish. And Hibs, fifth, pick up the additional Conference League place that opens up further down the line. It is, bluntly, Celtic’s success that makes this possible – and it’s worth stating plainly.
David Gray’s side will enter at the second qualifying round alongside Motherwell, and are expected to be seeded, which means avoiding heavy hitters like FC Copenhagen, Panathinaikos and İstanbul Başakşehir at that stage. Their first leg is scheduled for Thursday, July 23, with the return on July 30. To reach the Conference League main phase, they’ll need to navigate three qualifying rounds in total – no easy ask, as their exit to Legia Warsaw in extra time this season demonstrated. But the opportunity is there, and it’s a meaningful one: back-to-back European campaigns for the first time in 50 years at Easter Road.
The full picture for 2026/27 sees Scottish football send five clubs into three different European competitions. Celtic enter the Champions League play-off round as champions. Hearts come in at the second qualifying round of the Champions League. The Ibrox club take Europa League second qualifying round entry. Both Motherwell and Hibs head into the Conference League second qualifying round.
As ScottishFootball.info has noted, these entry allocations are unusually favourable – a product of Scotland’s rising coefficient, itself boosted by years of Celtic and others competing in the group stages. That coefficient doesn’t maintain itself. It needs Scottish clubs to keep progressing, and it needs Celtic to keep winning domestic honours that push the cascade further down the table.
Five European representatives. Three competitions. All of it, ultimately, flowing from the fact that the Hoops keep winning. That’s not a coincidence – it’s a pattern, and long may it continue.
Mon The Hoops.
