Flamengo have earmarked the first four fixtures after the restart as pivotal in the pursuit of Palmeiras. They resume on Wednesday against bottom side Chapecoense after almost 50 days without a competitive game. According to Globo.com, recent post World Cup returns suggest reasons for optimism.

The review looks at five-game spells after the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 World Cups. The 2002 edition is excluded as the Brasileirão was not yet a points system, and 2022 fell in the off season.

In 2006, Flamengo lost their first three league matches back, including 1-4 against Paraná and 0-1 to Vasco. Prioritising the Copa do Brasil paid off, with 2-0 and 1-0 wins over Vasco sealing the trophy.

In 2010, days after goalkeeper Bruno was arrested and with the team returning to the Maracanã, a 1-0 win over Botafogo set the tone. Another victory briefly lifted Flamengo into the G-4, before two draws and a defeat checked momentum.

The 2014 restart was bleak, a 2-1 loss to Athletico-PR at the Moacyrzão dropping the side to the foot of the table. A heavy 4-0 defeat at Internacional followed, although 1-0 wins over Botafogo and Sport bookended a 1-0 reverse at Chapecoense.

In 2018, Flamengo resumed as league leaders but fell 1-0 to São Paulo in round 13. They beat Botafogo 2-0, drew 1-1 at Santos and thrashed Sport 4-1, then drew 1-1 at Grêmio in the Copa do Brasil. Weeks later they won the Maracanã return to reach the semi-finals.
