FLW takes a look at how former Birmingham City boss Pep Clotet is doing

Former Oxford United boss Pep Clotet initially joined Birmingham City as assistant manager during the 2017/18 season to work alongside then boss Garry Monk.

But during the summer of 2019, Monk was dismissed from his role as Blues boss, which gave Clotet the opportunity to take charge of the St Andrew's outfit.

The Spaniard took charge of the Blues, then of the Championship, for less than a season though, as he left the club in July 2020, two weeks prior to his scheduled exit, according to BBC Sport.

Unusually, the 2019/20 second tier season was still ongoing throughout the summer of 2020 due to the fact that the Covid-19 pandemic had brought a pause to proceedings.

As per Transfermarkt, Clotet took charge of a total of 47 games, while in the Championship he maintained an average of 1.19 points per match.

The Blues finished the 2019/20 second tier campaign in 20th position, just two points above the relegation zone, but Clotet's most notable contribution to the club was handing then 16-year-old Jude Bellingham his debut, and a footballing sensation, who would go on to join Borussia Dortmund and subsequently Real Madrid was born.

Pep Clotet's career post Birmingham City has been a much-travelled one

After leaving St. Andrew's, the Spaniard has had somewhat of a rollercoaster ride. He would go on join Italian Serie B outfit Brescia in February 2021, and guided them to a play-off position.

But after Brescia suffered a defeat in the first round of the play-offs at the hands of Cittadella, causing Clotet and his former club to part company.

Ahead of the 2021/22 season, he became SPAL manager, but was sacked by January 2022 with the former Serie A side sitting just three points above the Serie B relegation zone.

However, his poor stint with SPAL did not hinder his job opportunities, as his former club, Brescia, re-appointed him ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

He was sacked by Brescia in December 2022 due to a poor run of form, but was bizarrely reinstated as manager in January 2023, only to be dismissed by the Serie B side for a final time less than a month later.

In March 2023, Clotet became the manager of then Russian Premier League side Torpedo Moscow, with whom he suffered relegation to the second tier.

And following a poor start to life in the second division of Russian football, Torpedo sacked Clotet in October 2023.

The ex-Blues boss was then out of work for a year, before being appointed as Triestina boss on 21st October 2024, where he will face a tough task as the Serie C side had managed just one win in 10 league games prior to his arrival.

But despite Triestina's poor form of late, Clotet appears excited about the task he has ahead.

He wrote on Instagram: "I arrive with enthusiasm and determination, ready to work together to overcome any obstacle.

"We will build a team that is united, determined and always eager to improve day after day."

Pep Clotet still feels an affinity with Birmingham and Bellingham

Recent activity on the 47-year-old's X and Instagram accounts indicate that he is still fond of the Blues and their former star man Bellingham.

Following Real Madrid's Champions League final victory at Wembley in June, Clotet expressed his delight for Bellingham's major achievement via X: "Congratulations, my friend.

"Happy for you and to see you enjoy such success!

"Totally deserved!!"

Meanwhile, last December he documented how pleased he was to re-visit St. Andrew's, and posted on Instagram saying: "Always a pleasure to be here.

"Special memories of a very happy chapter!"

Given the fact that Clotet is still evidently fond of the Blues, the St. Andrew's faithful may, in turn, wish him well in his Serie C relegation battle with Triestina.
