Huddersfield Town have confirmed the departure of their CEO

Huddersfield Town have endured an underwhelming second season back in League One.

The Terriers suffered relegation from the Championship in 2024, and were hoping to make quick work of earning promotion back to the second tier.

But the Yorkshire outfit finished 10th in the table, failing to even qualify for a play-off place, let alone compete for a top two position.

Huddersfield still have a chance at coming inside the top six this term, but they will need a strong run of results in the final few weeks to overcome the gap to Stevenage and that will be viewed with disappointment given that Town were widely-billed as potential title contenders before the season started.

Owner Kevin Nagle will be under pressure to oversee a change in fortune for the club, with fans frustrated at the lack of progress.

Huddersfield were a Premier League team as recently as 2019, and reached the play-off final in the Championship in 2022, but are a great distance away from the top flight now.

Nagle has responded to the announcement that Huddersfield’s CEO Jake Edwards has departed the club, thanking him for his role in leading multiple successes during his tenure.

The League One side’s owner claimed that they are parting on good terms, with the executive exiting his role immediately amid the team’s fight for a play-off place.

“I would like to give my personal thanks to Jake as he leaves his role at the club today,” Town’s said Nagle, via Yorkshire Live.

“Jake played a significant part in leading the club operation in many successful enterprises over our past three years.

“For that, I will always be grateful to him, and I will always consider him a friend.”

Edwards joined Huddersfield in the summer of 2023, with his exit coming just short of his three-year anniversary as CEO.

He previously spent eight years as president of the United Soccer League in America, where he would’ve worked alongside Nagle, who owns USL team Sacramento Republic.

It’s believed that his departure was agreed via mutual consent, with the team’s on-field performances underwhelming in a difficult second season in the third tier.

David Threlfall-Sykes is set to take on the role of CEO on an interim basis, and he will oversee the day-to-day running of the club as part of his role as chief operating officer.

Huddersfield began the campaign with the appointment of Lee Grant as manager, but he was dismissed in January.

Liam Manning was appointed as his replacement, although the 40-year-old is currently on compassionate leave, with Martin Drury and Jon Stead overseeing the final fixtures of the season.

Huddersfield are currently eighth in the League One table, four points adrift of Stevenage in sixth, while also having played an extra fixture.

The Terriers have just three games remaining to close the gap and earn a place in the play-offs.

Next up for the Yorkshire outfit is a trip to face third place Bolton Wanderers on Saturday in a 12.30pm kick-off.

A change behind the scenes was needed at Huddersfield

Huddersfield haven’t made the progress on the pitch in the last couple of years that fans would’ve been expecting, so perhaps now is a good time to make a change.

The CEO is overseeing the day-to-day operations of the club, so ultimately the buck stops with them, so it’s not surprising Edwards has taken the fall for a disappointing season.

The Terriers should be in the mix for promotion given their recent status in both the Premier League and the Championship, as they are now at risk of being stuck as a League One club.

Changing the CEO in the lead-up to the summer transfer window also leaves very little time for any major shake-ups that could impact their upcoming recruitment plans.
