In a tournament where few squads are entirely home-grown, Spain largely are, with Aymeric Laporte the lone exception. Born in France, like Le Normand, the Atlético Madrid centre-back was omitted late on. Real Madrid’s Huijsen represents Spain despite being born in Amsterdam in 2005.
According to Superdeporte, Spain have Spain-born players spread across six other World Cup nations at the tournament in Mexico, the United States and Canada.
Morocco feature six players born in Spain. They include goalkeeper Munir Mohamadi of Melilla, Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Díaz, Ismail Saibari, Chadi Riad and Ayoube Amaimouni, with Hakimi a Champions League winner and Brahim switching after Spain did not pick him.
Ghana call on Iñaki Williams, born in Bilbao in 1994 and a long-time Black Stars regular.
Mexico include Álvaro Fidalgo, the Oviedo-born midfielder who qualified after more than five years in the country. He debuted against South Africa and impressed from the start.
Ecuador turn to Jeremy Alberto Arévalo Mera, the Cantabria-born 2005 forward developed at Racing Santander and now at Stuttgart. He moved in January, has seven Bundesliga outings totalling 32 minutes and one assist.
Nico Paz, a breakout talent and one of Serie A’s best performers last season, will represent Argentina.
Uruguay’s squad includes Rodrigo Zalazar, born in Albacete on 12 August 1999, rewarded for a standout season at Braga with 16 league goals.
