FLW looks at how many tickets each club have been given ahead of the trip to Wembley in the League One play-off final

The League One play-off final is set, and it's rather apt that Stockport County and Bolton Wanderers, who began the campaign by facing off at Edgeley Park, will end the year by going head-to-head at Wembley.

By both teams' accounts, this season has been one of underachievement. Both had expectations of finishing inside the top two, but both finished miles off the automatic promotion places and had to settle for the play-offs.

Both the Hatters and the Trotters navigated tough play-off semi-finals against underdog opponents professionally.

Neither side conceded a goal across both legs, with Stockport brushing Stevenage aside, winning 3-0, while Bolton's 2-0 aggregate victory over Bradford City was a little grittier and harder fought.

But, no matter how both sets of fans feel about their team's campaign over the past nine months, it will be seen as a success if it ends with Championship promotion secured.

How many tickets have been allocated to each team for the League One play-off final

With second-tier football on the line, there's an expectation that a loud and large contingency will be following both sides down to the capital on May 24.

In the wake of Bolton's win over Bradford at Valley Parade on Thursday night, we now know how many from each side are expected to make the journey.

Steven Schumacher's side has been allocated 36,241 tickets on the West End of Wembley Stadium, while Stockport will be given an initial allocation of 22,000 on the East Side, with the potential of it increasing to approximately 36,000 if the demand is there.

Understandably, Bolton won't need that initial allocation, as their fanbase is larger than their play-off final opponents. The Trotters topped the attendance averages in the third tier this season with 21,692, so that, plus those who will make the trip down for the day, should fill that allocation.

Meanwhile, this is Stockport's second Wembley visit in the space of six weeks, having gone down for the Vertu Trophy final in April against Luton Town. The attendance for that final was 49,517, with over 30,000 of those fans supporting Jack Wilshere's side.

Granted, a few thousand Hatters fans would have likely sacrificed the first Wembley trip to ensure they had the funds available for the second one, so Stockport are expected to bring more, but they're understandably not immediately accepting the largest allocation possible.

Bolton Wanderers and Stockport County will hope to end play-off hoodoo and secure promotion

Some sides have incredible luck when it comes to winning in the play-offs. Others, for some reason or another, fail to rise to the occasion. Recently, both of these sides fell into the latter catagory.

Indeed, this is the third time in the last four seasons that Bolton have been in the third-tier play-offs. Two years ago, they got to the final but were upset by Oxford United.

As for Stockport, it's a known fact that Dave Challinor has yet to finish outside a play-off spot in any of his 15 full seasons as a manager.

This is his third play-off campaign with the Hatters, but he has yet to earn promotion via the play-offs in the previous two. As for Stockport as a team, they have fallen in each of their last four attempts in the play-offs, dating all the way back to the 2017/18 National League North season.

Back in 2023, County were beaten on penalties in the League Two play-off final against Carlisle United, and penalties were their downfall last season against Leyton Orient in the semi-finals.

The travelling fans of the Stockport persuasion will not want spot-kicks to decide things next Sunday. Neither will Bolton fans, either, as their own play-off worries would be kicking in at that point, too.
