Marlon Freitas, 30, has swiftly become a de facto leader at Palmeiras, anchoring midfield with Andreas Pereira.
According to Globo.com, he arrived as the club’s first signing of 2026 with leadership and experience in mind, and within two months was fast-tracked into the starting XI, widely seen as a captain without an armband.
Known at Botafogo as a second midfielder, he has been deployed deeper at Palmeiras, sitting in front of the defence. That shift prompted calls for an orthodox number 5 and doubts about bite alongside Andreas, which he dismisses.
After the 2026 state title, he stressed that two accomplished footballers can play together, noted he has performed the holding role many times, and said his understanding with Andreas makes gelling straightforward.
He added that the pair like to control possession and feel they are executing it well, while accepting there is room to evolve through the campaign.
Freitas says he has always carried a leadership streak, but had to gauge how to bring it into a new dressing room, and that the freedom afforded by the club eased that process.
Since joining he has featured in 15 matches, starting 12, and has been notably vocal with referees and team-mates. That presence and experience were exactly what the board and coaching staff sought.
