Aaron Ramsdale has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer
Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been linked with a move to Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to The Sun, the Red Devils are eyeing a move for the Englishman ahead of the upcoming market.
Ramsdale’s future at St. Mary’s is in question following confirmation of the club’s relegation back to the Championship.
The 26-year-old only joined Southampton last summer from Arsenal, but could be set for an exit despite having a contract until 2028.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to see how much he might earn if he moved to Old Trafford.
Andre Onana is currently Man United’s first choice goalkeeper under Ruben Amorim, with the Cameroon international in his second season with the club.
However, a number of high-profile errors have led to speculation over his future, with the player dropped after the team’s Europa League clash against Lyon.
Onana arrived from Inter Milan, having helped them to the Champions League final in 2023, and signed a deal with the Manchester outfit worth £120,000 per week.
It has been reported by The Athletic that a sale of the 28-year-old could be on the cards this summer, which could impact Ramsdale’s future with Southampton, although it’s widely expected that Onana will eventually stay.
Altay Bayındır is second choice, and was brought into the team against Newcastle United following the 2-2 draw away in France.
The Turkish international also signed in 2023, and is on a deal worth £35,000 per week.
Meanwhile, Tom Heaton is also at the club as he reaches the final stages of his career, ending his playing days back where he first came through, with the goalkeeper earning £45,000 per week.
Given Heaton’s likely impending retirement, Man United will likely be in the market for a replacement in the squad who can fill up a homegrown slot, which Ramsdale would qualify as.
However, Ramsdale is unlikely to want to take on a third-choice position at a Premier League club, having departed Arsenal after being displaced by David Raya.
The 26-year-old is coming into the prime of his career, and will surely want to continue playing week-in and week-out.
The goalkeeper is currently on a deal worth a weekly £120,000 at Southampton, making him the team’s top earner.
If he were to move to Man United as a replacement for Onana, then he might be able to maintain that kind of salary.
But if the Old Trafford hierarchy only see him as a back-up option, then it’s likely he will have to take a pay cut in order to facilitate the move.
While it’s unlikely he would accept something as low as Bayindir’s £35,000 per week, a deal more in line with the £60-80,000 per week range might be closer to what Man United might offer.
But there remains a lot of unknowns surrounding Man United going into the summer window, with Amorim set to oversee his first pre-season in charge at Old Trafford after arriving as manager in November.
