Despite having the Championship top scorer, Sammie Szmodics, banging in the goals, Blackburn struggled hugely for form last season and they eventually finished 19th in the table, just three points outside the drop zone.

It was their defensive record that really let them down, as well as their inability to earn a consistent run of positive results. John Eustace took charge of the club in February and narrowly managed to avoid relegation before using the summer to refresh and re-think.

The biggest blow of all occurred when Szmodics departed for the Premier League but Blackburn did some great business elsewhere to ensure that they were not going to flirt with relegation once again.

Eustace went out and signed some experienced Championship players, with the likes of Andreas Weimann, Danny Batth and Todd Cantwell linking up with the squad. The trio have so far impressed the Blackburn faithful, as well as other summer signings like Yuki Ohashi and Lewis Baker.

The squad is in a decent place right now and as a result, they find themselves within touching distance of the play-off places. Blackburn do need to work on their consistency though, as they recently endured a three-game losing streak. Runs like that will have a big impact on their league placing come the end of the season.

Blackburn have taken in over £30 million for the sales of Adam Wharton and Sammie Szmodics in recent windows, but little of that has been spent on transfer fees. However, there are signs that there has been more investment in the playing squad. Today, Football League World looks into the payroll at Ewood Park, and more specifically, the average weekly payroll.

Blackburn's weekly payroll

Blackburn are not among the biggest spenders in the Championship like they once would have been, but are still spending a lot of money on their weekly payroll for the playing squad.

In total, they are spending an estimated £234,000 on their weekly payroll, which equates to £8,667 per player on average. That puts them 17th among Championship clubs.

Their fierce rivals, Burnley, are spending an estimated £20,552 per player a week on average, while the league leaders, Leeds United, spend on average a whopping £30,783 per player a week.

Todd Cantwell is Rovers' highest earner

It may come as no surprise to see Todd Cantwell's name at the top of the 'highest earner' list. The attacking midfielder is one of the biggest names in the squad, having played in the Premier League and for Rangers, and as a result is earning an estimated £30,000 per week, which is a lot more than any other player in the squad.

Lewis Baker is earning an estimated £20,000 a week, but he is on loan from Stoke City and it is unknown how the two clubs are splitting his wages. Fellow summer signing, Andreas Weimann is next on the list, earning an estimated £17,500 a week, which shows that the club certainly invested in new signings ahead of this season.

Cantwell started off by making a few substitute appearances for Blackburn and is now a regular starter either as a number 10 or on the left wing, and has grabbed a couple of assists already.

Weimann, on the other hand, came in as an experienced pro and has shown that he still knows where the back of the net is, having bagged a handful of Championship goals since arriving in the summer.

Blackburn's average weekly payroll shows that a number of the summer signings are among the highest earners at the club, which can only be a promising sign, as it suggests that the playing squad is finally being invested in.
