A number of Championship clubs are taking an interest in Wigan Athletic's Huddersfield Town loanee Joe Taylor, including Stoke City and Huddersfield Town.

Joe Taylor scored seven and assisted two for Huddersfield Town before sealing a loan switch to Wigan Athletic during January. Four of those goals were in the league but he's not looked back after joining the Latics.

He has nine goals in 14 League One games for Gary Caldwell's side. Per FotMob, only Reading striker Jack Marriott (0.82) has a better goal per 90 ratio than Taylor in the third tier, which is why interest has grown in the 23-year-old.

His finishing is impressive, with Taylor needing to develop in other ways. However, he has plenty of potential and is far from peak-age. Many clubs will look to sign him before he enters his prime, with his current trajectory looking likely to take him above League One.

Taylor joined Wigan before Liam Manning joined Huddersfield, which has been a disastrous decision when factoring in how few goals Taylor's parent club have managed in that time.

Preston North End and Oxford United are keen on Taylor, per a Football League World exclusive. But Championship interest in the centre-forward has been growing already in recent days.

It's since been stated that Stoke City and Ipswich Town are keeping tabs on Taylor's Wigan progress. It got us thinking about the cost of a signing from League One, including how expensive his current Huddersfield wages are, too.

Taylor's reputation skyrocketed after a loan in League Two with Colchester United followed by one with Lincoln City in League One a few years back, which prompted his permanent switch from Luton Town to Huddersfield.

For that reason, he may be affordable to the biggest and most well off clubs in the Championship. However, what exactly is he paid currently with the Terriers? We had a look at a source detailing the predicted figure.

Per SalarySport, only four players are paid more than Taylor in the Huddersfield squad. They estimate a roughly £9,100 weekly salary. Per Capology, it's also predicted that Ipswich only have five players who are paid less than that.

It means they could easily afford him, while Stoke have 10 players on cheaper wages than that — according to Capology's estimates. It seemingly points to the transfer fee being the primary concern, which will somewhat depend on his form until the end of the campaign.

Why Championship clubs are taking an interest in Joe Taylor at Wigan Athletic

Taylor may not dominate physically, but his biggest strengths lie in sharp instincts and intelligent attacking runs around the box and off the shoulder. His finishing is already clinical, particularly inside the box, where he reacts quickly to loose balls and half-chances.

What really elevates him, though, is that movement — he constantly plays on the shoulder of defenders, timing runs to exploit gaps and stay onside. Beyond that, his acceleration over short distances makes him difficult to track, especially against slower centre-backs.

He’s also shown composure in one-on-one situations, rarely rushing opportunities. Despite his height, he competes well by using clever positioning rather than aerial duels. That said, to be a top Championship centre-forward, he may need more support around him or even a strike partner to do the physical work.

Another area of his game showing consistent improvement is his work rate. He presses defenders more aggressively now, forcing mistakes high up the pitch. Combined with good awareness and anticipation, this makes him a persistent threat.

He needs more refinement for Stoke or Ipswich or indeed someone else, but his ability to link play in tight areas is improving too. He is constantly adding other layers to his game.
