Haji Wright has started the 2025/26 campaign in fine fashion

Coventry City have emerged as the Championship’s standout team after nine matches.

Frank Lampard’s side entered the 2025/26 campaign with the shadow of last season’s play-off heartbreak still hanging over them. The Sky Blues were moments away from a penalty shoot-out, which would’ve handed them a shot at Premier League football, but a Dan Ballard header put pay to that.

It would’ve been easy for Coventry to suffer a slow start to the current term due to this disappointment, but that hasn’t been the case.

In fact, it has motivated the Sky Blues to perform at an even higher level than they were previously capable of. After nine games, the CBS Arena outfit sit top of the Championship table with 19 points.

They are the only team in the division yet to taste defeat, but their most impressive trait has been uncontrollable goalscoring.

Coventry aren’t just beating teams, they are destroying them. They’ve scored 27 goals thus far, which is the highest total in the second-tier by a country mile.

Ipswich Town and Bristol City have netted the second-highest tally of 15, which is almost half of what the Sky Blues have managed to achieve.

A key contributor to this success has been Haji Wright, who tops the Championship’s goalscoring charts with eight strikes thus far.

The 27-year-old has performed at a consistently high level in all nine of his league appearances and Football League World's Coventry City fan pundit, Chris Deez, believes interest in the forward could present itself in January.

"There's been interest in him in the past and I think there's almost certainly going to be some in January, but we know how hard it is to make those big transfers happen in January," stated Chris.

"We won't want to let him go because even if we got good money, he'd be hard to replace at that time of year and I think other clubs know that we would ask for more money at that time of year as well.

"We'd have to have a real quality striker lined up and ready, with the deal good to go and ready to sign on the dotted line before letting Haji go because if he goes, we're absolutely stuffed because we cannot survive and cope with Ellis Simms as our main striker."

That’s an extremely plausible scenario, as clubs all over Europe will be extremely aware of how well Wright is performing at this moment in time. As a result, FLW have taken a look at how much the USMNT attacker is currently earning.

According to Capology, Wright is taking home an estimated £25,000 on a weekly basis, making him Coventry City’s joint highest earner.

He has two years still remaining on his deal at the CBS Arena, after joining the Sky Blues from Turkish side Antalyaspor in 2023 for £7.7 million.

Coventry City will hope to retain Haji Wright’s services in January

If Wright keeps his form up and continues to score a goal nearly every game until January, then there will no doubt be huge interest in his services during the winter window.

The 27-year-old has consistently shown over the past few seasons that he has what it takes to net on a regular basis, but he appears to have taken his game up to another level this term.

Coventry must resist any potential desire to sell though, even if they are given an opportunity to make a profit on Wright.

Cashing in on your leading goalscorer is never a wise move in a promotion fight and could lead Lampard to question how ambitious the Sky Blues really are.
