Mike Ashley has emerged as a possible candidate to purchase Sheffield Wednesday from Dejphon Chansiri
Mike Ashley has emerged as a potential buyer at Sheffield Wednesday amid their financial issues behind the scenes.
According to journalist Alan Biggs, the former Newcastle United owner is one of the names being linked with a prospective takeover at Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday supporters will be keen to see someone purchase the Owls from Dejphon Chansiri, who has become a wildly unpopular figure through this year.
The Thai businessman has shown he is unable to sustainably run the Championship side, with the club failing to pay player wages on time on numerous occasions in 2025.
Here we look at how much it would cost someone like Ashley to purchase the Yorkshire outfit from Chansiri…
Ashley will have to stump up a nine figure sum in order to convince Chansiri to sell the club any time soon.
At least, according to the BBC, the Sheffield Wednesday owner is seeking a £100 million fee in order to relinquish his stake in the team.
It was reported by The Star back in April that Chansiri turned down an approach from a US-based consortium, which was described as derisory.
However, it remains unclear what kind of figure was on offer, with the club continuing to struggle financially in the months since then.
Former Crystal Palace owner John Textor has also been mentioned as a prospective new owner of the second division side in recent months.
The American is no longer involved with the Eagles after selling his stake in the London outfit in a deal worth £190 million earlier this year.
However, the latest development surrounding his interest indicates that a deal won’t be agreed any time soon.
It’s been reported that Textor believes a takeover will be “really complicated” which has cast doubt over whether he can finalise terms with Chansiri.
This could open the door for Ashley, who has been out of English football since his sale of Newcastle United in 2021.
Ashley agreed a deal with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) to sell his stake in Newcastle for £305 million.
He also recently sold his ownership of Coventry City’s CBS Arena stadium back to the club in a deal worth around £40 million.
So, theoretically, the British businessman will have the money to afford a £100 million deal to purchase Sheffield Wednesday.
However, as their financial issues persist, they become an increasingly distressed asset, which will reduce its value dramatically.
Championship rivals West Brom were sold in February 2024 in a deal valued at around £60 million, indicating that the £100 million price tag is already quite ambitious.
On that basis, it’s difficult to see anyone stumping up the nine-figure sum for the Owls, particularly with relegation to League One now realistically on the cards for this season.
Dropping down to the third division will lower Sheffield Wednesday’s value further, especially if even more of their first team squad departs as free agents.
Given Chansiri’s mismanagement of the Owls, the sooner a sale can be completed the better, but it’s difficult to see Ashley paying anything close to £100 million for the honours.
