Throughout the current season's opening months, Wednesday fans have committed themselves to stadium boycotts, alongside the refusal to comply with anything involving money going towards Chansiri, who took over at Hillsborough in 2015.

As a result of the announcement, Owls supporters went on to pack out Hillsborough for their clash against Oxford, signalling the beginning of a new era for the club.

The Owls remain rooted to the bottom of the Championship, with a 12-point deduction making them firm relegation favourites. However, for the first time in years, as the decline continued under Chansiri, fans can begin looking up.

Owls megastore brings in big cash windfall as fans end boycott

Following continuous boycotts throughout the season's opening stages, Owls supporters flocked to Hillsborough over the weekend for the clash against Oxford, and to finally start spending their money in the club shop again.

On Sunday, joint administrator Kris Wigfield released a statement outlining the impact of the supporters over what has been a busy weekend for the club, reading: "A message to our supporters, Saturday marked our first match since entering administration - and while the result wasn't what any of us wanted, what happened off the pitch was nothing short of remarkable."

"From Friday lunchtime through to kick-off, you - the supporters - have shown this football club what it truly means to belong to Sheffield Wednesday. Since the announcement, over £200,000 has been spent in the Club Shop, and we sold 9,000 tickets for the match in just 24 hours."

"The kiosks were packed with fans buying food and beer, and every bit of that support matters more than you can imagine."

Carrying on with thanks to all involved with the ongoing situation at the club, the statement concluded, saying: "This club has been through difficult times before, and every time it's the same thing that gets us through - you, our incredible supporters. We're not out of the woods yet. But together, we can rebuild this great football club and make Hillsborough a place we're all proud of again."

Long road to recovery begins now for Wednesday fans

Wednesday may sit rock bottom of the Championship with a 12-point deduction and a mountain to climb for survival, but for the first time in recent years, hope has returned to Hillsborough.

As they have throughout the season's opening months, Henrik Petersen and his depleted squad face a huge challenge to remain competitive in the division. But for supporters, the football itself feels secondary as of now. The victory for the fans is that their club belongs to them once again.

Since the successive play-off finishes in 2016 and 2017, Chansiri's reign has been consistently marked by chaos. And the scenes at Hillsborough this weekend provide a reminder of what exactly football is about, with fans allowed to spend their hard-earned money on their club again, while having a half-time beer without lining the pocket of Chansiri.
