Saido Berahino was once the best paid player at West Brom
Saido Berahino was an exciting young talent at West Brom when he broke into the first team squad from the academy system.
The forward made his Premier League debut at the age of just 20, coming off the bench in a 2-0 loss to Swansea City.
He contributed five goals and one assist in his first campaign with the club, helping them survive against relegation to the Championship.
Across the next two-and-a-bit seasons, he played 73 more times in the top flight, scoring 18 goals, before making the switch to Stoke City in 2016.
He was West Brom’s top earner at that time, and here we compare his wages using estimated figures from Capology to see how much more he was earning than current star, Daryl Dike.
Berahino came through West Brom’s academy system to become a breakout star under Steve Clarke during the 2013/14 campaign.
While Clarke’s time in charge didn’t last very long into that season, the Scot was dismissed in December and replaced by Pepe Mel, the striker remained an important part of the side as they finished 17th in the table.
His influence in the side grew, which led to him earning a bumper contract that raised his salary prior to his move to Stoke in 2016.
Berahino was the top earner at West Brom right before his switch to the Potters, with the exciting forward earning an estimated £80,000 per week.
The striker had scored 14 times in the prior term, with Albion moving up to 13th in the Premier League in the process.
Berahino had a lot of hype around him, and his salary indicated just how highly West Brom thought of the player at the time.
The next best paid player in the team was Claudio Yacob, with the midfielder receiving £60,000-a-week, which was a significant amount lower than Berahino’s wages.
Solómon Rondon was also earning £60,000-a-week at West Brom at the time, with Nacer Chadli (£55,000), Darren Fletcher (£52,000) and Ben Foster (£50,000) being the only other players above the £50,000 per week threshold.
Berahino made the switch to Stoke in a deal worth a reported £12 million, but struggled to live up to the same standards.
Daryl Diked arrived at West Brom with high expectations surrounding his move due to his impressive performances while on loan at Barnsley.
It was reported that the deal with Orlando FC was worth in excess of £7 million, and he has struggled to live up to that price tag due to significant injury issues.
Nevertheless, Dike is still one of the better paid players in the Albion squad, with the American receiving £25,000 per week.
Only Nat Phillips and Chris Mepham earn more than the forward, with the pair earning £40,000 and £35,000 per week, respectively.
The difference in pay between Dike and Berahino highlights the difference that playing in the Premier League can make to a club’s wage bill.
Even though Berahino is almost 10 years gone from West Brom, his salary from 2016 still far exceeds what anyone at the club is paid now.
