Barcelona are preparing to return to action in the UEFA Champions League with their Round of 16 tie against Newcastle United later tonight, with the first leg taking place at St James’ Park.

Defeating the Premier League club and progressing to the next round would be important for several reasons for the Blaugrana.

From a sporting perspective, progressing in the tie would secure Barcelona’s place among the eight best teams in Europe, while also putting them just three steps away from winning a title that has eluded the club since 2015.

The financial incentives are also extremely significant, as this season’s Champions League once again features a large prize pool distributed according to each club’s performance throughout the competition.

After finishing strongly in the league phase and qualifying directly for the Round of 16, Barcelona avoided the playoff round and have already secured a substantial amount of prize money from UEFA.

The prize for reaching the quarterfinals

Now, according to SPORT, if Barcelona manage to eliminate Newcastle in the Round of 16 and reach the Champions League quarterfinals, UEFA would award them an additional €12.5 million.

That would push the Catalans’ total earnings in this season’s tournament to approximately €64.5 million.

So far, Barça havp pocketed around €52 million from their participation and results in this season’s competition.

A large portion of that income comes simply from taking part in the tournament. Each of the 36 clubs in the Champions League receives €18.6 million as a participation payment from UEFA.

The rest has come from sporting performance. Barcelona won five of their eight matches in the league phase, with each victory bringing €2.1 million in additional revenue. Their draw against Club Brugge KV also added €700,000.

Reaching the Round of 16 itself brought another €11 million, while qualifying directly for that stage added €2 million more. On top of that, Barcelona earned €8.8 million through the distribution of “shares,” thanks to finishing fifth in the league phase standings.

For Barcelona, therefore, progressing in Europe would not only move them closer to a trophy they have not won since 2015, but would also provide a major financial boost to the club.
