According to Sky Sports (11.51), the Scottish giants are ready to listen to offers for the midfielder ahead of the 2 February transfer deadline.

Rothwell has struggled for game time at Ibrox this season under Danny Rohl, making a total of eight appearances in the Premiership, including five starts.

His most recent game for the club came on 23 October in a Europa League clash against Norwegian side Brann in which he played 63 minutes.

Rothwell joined Rangers last summer following the appointment of Russell Martin as manager, but the move to Rohl has seen him fall way down the pecking order.

Rangers are open to the sale of Rothwell this January amid interest from Sheffield United, who are looking to bolster their midfield options.

It’s believed that the Glasgow outfit are already willing to let the player depart on a permanent basis given he has yet to feature in the league under Rohl.

It was reported earlier this month that Sheffield United are interested in a loan move for the 31-year-old.

It remains to be seen whether the Blades would be keen on a permanent fee for the player, or if their preference is still for a temporary move.

Chris Wilder will be hoping to bolster the team’s options before the 2 February, with the team hoping to still compete for a play-off place.

A 3-1 win over Ipswich Town last weekend brought the Yorkshire outfit to within nine points of sixth place Wrexham, with the side also holding a game in hand on some of their Championship rivals.

Next up for Sheffield United is a trip to face Millwall on 31 January in a 3pm kick-off at the Den.

Joe Rothwell’s Leeds United loan stint shows what he can bring to Sheffield United

Rothwell spent last season on loan at Leeds United, helping Daniel Farke’s side to a 100 point campaign that brought the title and promotion to the Premier League.

He contributed four assists from 36 appearances in the Championship, and showed himself as a very capable player at this level.

His brief stint with Southampton in the prior campaign was also impressive, so there’s no real surprise to Sheffield United’s interest in the player.
