It costs a lot of money to own a football club these days, so here's what the owners of the 24 clubs in the EFL Championship are worth.
Since football clubs started to proliferate in the 1860s, the great and the good have been involved. From the mill and factory owners of the industrial revolution to the Hollywood celebrities and business speculators of the 2020s, professional football would have looked very different today without their involvement.
A professional sport requires wages to be paid, and it's always been a truth of the game that the need to acquire the best players in order to compete will trump all other considerations. Clubs have long been dependent on the munificence of others to remain competitive, whether we're talking about the 'Scotch professors' of the 1870s or the chase for a Premier League place in the 21st century.
It should be pointed out that estimating the wealth of high-status individuals such as football club owners is far from an exact science.
Valuations can vary wildly from source to source. In the case of one of those listed below, the individual concerned doesn't even know the answer himself!

They were worth an estimated $175 million as of 2017, which at the current exchange rate is around £133.3 million.

As with many other clubs on this list, the owners of Sheffield United’s value is difficult to come by. Steven Rosen's personal net worth is not publicly available. He's another wealth fund manager. But main partner Helmy Eltoukhy's net worth has been estimated at $197 million, or £150 million.

Since 2010, Rovers have been owned by the Indian poultry giants Venkys, though again things can start to get rather complicated. The company that owns the club are Venky’s London Ltd., a subsidiary of Venky’s India. Venky’s London are valued at around £29.5 million, though the main company is worth just over $2.1 billion, or just over £1.6 billion. Venky’s London are owed a whopping £134 million by Blackburn Rovers, which pushes their paper value up to £163.5 million,

A sale of the Swans in November 2024 left the club’s majority shareholders as Andy Coleman, Brett Cravat and Jason Cohen, whose combined net worth has been estimated at £230 million. They have a combined 77.4% shareholding in the club.

By some distance the best-known owners in the Championship, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been successful both in acting and in their other business interests. They have been listed as a having a combined net worth of around $400 million, or £305 million.

The ownership of Acun Illicali hasn’t been without its controversies. The club’s Turkish owner made his fortune through his involvement in media. Earlier this year, The League Paper estimated his value at being between £225 million and £375 million. It may even be that Illicali doesn’t even know himself, since The League Paper also quoted him as having said, “It’s impossible for me to know my monthly income, I’m beyond calculation.”

David Clowes bought the Rams out of administration in 2023, and his family now control the club. According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2025, they’re worth £380 million from their involvement in the property business.
