Barcelona have been largely pleased with the impact of Marcus Rashford since arriving on loan in the summer from Manchester United. There has been plenty of debate over whether Barcelona should activate a €30m buy clause in the summer, but a change at Old Trafford could impact their decision.

Manager Hansi Flick has been full of praise for Rashford in recent weeks, and the England international is one of their most productive forwards in terms of goal contributions. Some reports have said that Barcelona are keen to keep him permanently, while others have cast doubt on whether Barcelona will fork out to do so.

Rashford was keen to leave Old Trafford in the summer, after little to no game time under Ruben Amorim, who was not keen to give him a big role. Spending the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, Manchester United were keen to sell him last summer, but Barcelona were able to negotiate a loan of their own, with the Red Devils desperate to get his large wages off the books.

The Mirror say that were Ole Gunnar Solksjaer to take charge, then it could alter the situation completely, as the pair have a good relationship from the Norwegian’s first spell. However The Sun, via ESPN, report that club officials at United are still keen to offload Rashford, feeling he does not benefit the dressing room culture.

Rashford’s options in the summer

He has certainly been useful for Barcelona this season, but their stance may hinge on whether they can fit the deal into their salary limit. Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring his situation should he become available. The Blaugrana may well have tried to haggle the price of a permanent option down, but if a return to Old Trafford does become viable, then it will strengthen United’s negotiating position. For his part, Rashford has voiced a desire to stay at Barcelona.
