It's been a frustrating league campaign for the Blades this term, with a dismal start to the season proving costly whilst under the management of Ruben Selles, who was subsequently relieved of his duties in charge.

They're currently sat 15th in the Championship table, and have struggled to build any sort of momentum, which will be particularly frustrating for Chris Wilder, who was appointed as Selles' successor earlier in the season.

Sheffield United are winless from their last five matches in the second tier, and will be eager to pick up a morale-boosting win from their final game of the 2025/26 season this weekend, as they take on Derby County, in what will be another tricky test for the Blades.

It's a summer of departures and key decisions, with some senior players heading into the final few weeks of their contracts at Bramall Lane, whilst the club's loan players will return to their parent clubs. A huge rebuild looms, which Wilder will have to successfully navigate if he wants the South Yorkshire side to rediscover its promotion credentials in the 2026/27 term.

The Championship promotion race will certainly be competitive next season, with Burnley and Wolves already being confirmed as two of the teams that have been relegated from the Premier League - and they're likely to be joined by one of Tottenham Hotspur or West Ham United

Kyle Walker has emerged as a potential transfer target for Sheffield United this summer, with the experienced defender currently on the books with Burnley.

The full-back still has one year remaining on his current deal with Burnley, who are preparing for life in the second tier this summer as well.

The Star have revealed that Sheffield United are interested in a deal to sign the former England international, who has recently announced his retirement for the Three Lions. It's not clear as to whether any official approach has been made as of yet, but it's claimed that the Blades are interested in a return for their former defender if it's a possibility.

Walker signed for Burnley in the summer of 2025, and has gone on to make 32 appearances for the Clarets in the Premier League this term, in what has been a frustrating campaign on the whole for them, as they made a swift return to the Championship.

Widely-regarded among the finest full-backs in Premier League history from his trophy-laden spell under Pep Guardiola, while being undoubtedly one of the most decorated, Walker has previously outlined his desire to return home to where it all started before hanging up his boots and it will be interesting to see how this potential saga plays out in the coming weeks and months.

What would Kyle Walker bring to the Blades?

Walker is a player that Sheffield United's supporters will know well, having coming through the club's academy ranks, before going on to make two appearances for them in the senior team. He then moved to Tottenham Hotspur, where he caught the eye for all the right reasons across an eight-year spell with Spurs.

During that time with Tottenham, he spent a season on loan with Sheffield United in the Championship during the 2009/10 season. It was at Manchester City where Walker enjoyed his most successful spell, as he won six Premier League titles, as well as one Champions League trophy.

Walker would certainly bring a winning mentality to Sheffield United, having enjoyed so much success in his career away from Bramall Lane. The full-back area is definitely one that could benefit from being strengthened, with Ki-Jana Hoever set to return to Wolves from his loan spell with the Blades.

Femi Seriki has occupied the right-back spot in Chris Wilder's team for large parts of this year's campaign, and Walker could certainly bring the best out of him as well, and so it could be a useful addition for Sheffield United if an agreement was reached.
