According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland will begin the new Premier League season with an away trip to Ipswich Town after learning their opening-day opponents on Thursday.
Ipswich, promoted as Championship runners-up, join play-off winners Hull City and title winners Coventry City under Frank Lampard after a 25-year top-flight absence.
Coventry return to the top flight. They are yet to add to their squad in this window, with goalkeeper Brad Collins and midfielder Jamie Allen departing at the end of their contracts, and an on-loan Tottenham Hotspur winger returning to his parent club.
Portman Road was rocked as two-time promotion winner Kieran McKenna ended his four-year reign. A replacement has not yet been announced, with former Bournemouth and Wolves boss Gary O’Neil understood to be close to being appointed. The Tractor Boys have confirmed permanent deals for Ajax striker Chuba Akpom and Reims defender Cedric Kipre, while goalkeeper Arijanet Muric has left for Sassuolo.
Hull sealed promotion by beating Middlesbrough in the play-off final. Their squad will need work, with loanees Joe Gelhart, Toby Collyer, Amir Hadziahemotvic, Lewis Koumas, John Lundstrom and Yu Hirakawa all returning to their parent clubs. Despite links to additions, the Tigers have not yet made a new signing.
All three newcomers are due to step up preparations when pre-season training begins next month.
