Looking at this updated Champions League table on Wednesday morning.

Newcastle United fans having seen their team lose 2-1 away against Marseille.

This follows defeat to Barcelona in the opening Swiss League match, then victories over Union S-G, Benfica and Athletic Club Bilbao, before Tuesday’s match in France.

United leading 1-0 at half-time but two Marseille goals in the five minutes after the break turning this latest match around.

Remember, the top eight will automatically go through to the last 16 knockout stage.

Whilst those finishing 9th to 24th will go into two-legged play-offs to decide the other eight that will make up the final 16.

Eddie Howe’s side having now played five of their eight league matches in the Champions League so far, with Bayer Leverkusen away next, followed by PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park, before finally PSG away.

This is how the Champions League table now looks on Wednesday (26 November 2025) morning:

As you can see, Newcastle United currently in 8th place in the Champions League table, an automatic qualifying place for the last 16 knockout stages.

There are nine more Champions League fifth round matches (see below) to play tonight.

Best case scenario – Newcastle United could stay as high as eighth, if other results go our way.

Worst case scenario – Newcastle United could drop as low as twelfth, if other results don’t go our way.

Back on the positive side of things, by my reckoning the biggest gap possible between Newcastle United and an automatic top eight qualifying spot after tonight’s results, will be one point.

Champions League fixtures in the fifth round of matches:

Tuesday 25 November

Ajax 0 Benfica 2

Galatasaray 0 Union S-G 1

Bodo/Glimt 2 Juventus 3

Borussia Dortmund 4 Villarreal 0

Chelsea 3 Barcelona 0

Man City 0 Bayer Leverkusen 2

Marseille 2 Newcastle United 1
