Les Bleus and La Roja clash with a spot in the final on the line

France face Spain this evening with a spot in the World Cup final on the line.

Les Bleus’ romp through this competition is about to meet its strongest opposition yet as they face their southern neighbours.

After taking nine points from a possible nine in the group stage, France have hardly broke a sweat in cruising past Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco to reach this stage.

They are now in the semi-finals for the third World Cup on the spin and hoping to reach a third consecutive final, too.

Spain, meanwhile, have not progressed beyond the quarter-finals since they won this competition back in 2010.

They have the historic upper hand over France, having won 18 of their 38 meetings, but will have their work cut out for them here.

La Roja have laboured somewhat en route to the semi-finals, edging Belgium and Portugal by way of late Mikel Merino goals, and are about to face the undisputed tournament favourites in France, whose rip-roaring attack will give Unai Simon a very busy night indeed.

Tonight’s victor will face either England or Argentina in the final.
