How to watch NYCFC's Leagues Cup game with Santos, time, and more | OneFootball

It has only been a few weeks since Major League Soccer resumed and since New York City FC began the second part of the season.  The team won their first two matches against the Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire FC before drawing with Toronto FC over the weekend.  But now, the Pigeons will embark on their Leagues Cup journey, playing their Phase One games over the next week and a half.

The first match will be against Club Santos Laguna, S.A. de C.V. at Sports Illustrated Stadium.  Sadly, all of the Leagues Cup games for the Boys in Blue will be in New Jersey, so that means there is a high chance that there will not be many NYCFC fans.  Nevertheless, this one will be considered a home game for the Pigeons.  Whether they have an advantage based on the fans for this match and the next two is questionable.

Still, Santos is the team that the Pigeons should beat when all is said and done.  The Liga MX side has finished in last place in three of the four Aperturas and Clausuras over the past two years.  In other words, it has been a difficult time for them.  NYCFC truly should win this match.  But again, just because they should on paper, it does not mean that they will.  Look at the Toronto FC fixture; that should have ended in a win but instead ended in a draw.

Of course, in the Leagues Cup, any draws go straight into a penalty kick shootout.  And if NYCFC wants to have any chance of moving on into the knockout rounds, then they must beat Santos, and convincingly too.  Moving on will be a challenge since only the top four Liga MX and MLS sides will continue to the quarterfinals.  With so many injuries to the Pigeons, it would not be shocking if Pascal Jansen does not focus on the tournament.

Final notes

While it has been discussed that the game should be won, note that NYCFC lost to Club Puebla last year, and that was the team they should have beaten on paper.  Therefore, if the club wants to truly commit to the tournament, then they must face Santos as if they are facing teams like Inter Miami CF or Nashville SC.
