FLW compares the Reedtz brothers net worth to the Football League's wealthiest owners.
Notts County have enjoyed a steady improvement so far under the guidance of Danish owners Christoffer and Alexander Reedtz.
The Scandinavian brothers took over the club back in the summer of 2019, with the Magpies a non-league club for the first time in their then 157-year history. They also faced an imminent court date, and one of the Reedtz’ first acts as owners was to settle Notts’ significant debt, fending off a winding up petition in the process.
Since then, the club has gone from strength to strength under their leadership. On the pitch, they are fighting for promotion at the top of League Two, while off it, there have been several exciting developments at the club, not least ‘The Nest’, a state-of-the-art fanzone just outside the ground.
Although the brothers prefer to spend their money in a more measured fashion than some of the other clubs in the lower leagues, it remains evident that they certainly aren’t short of cash by any means.
With that in mind, FLW takes a look at how much the brothers are worth, and how that compares to the richest clubs in the EFL.
A key aspect of the duo’s success so far at the helm of the world’s oldest football league club can be attributed to their prior knowledge of football.
Unlike some owners, who can be distant and not overly interested in the game, the Reedtz brothers have built their career around their love for the sport.
The pair run a football data analysis company called Football Radar, which specialises in “rating players and predicting the outcome of matches and competitions.”
The company is a “leading provider” of betting advice and features teams of analysts focusing on leagues all around the world.
While it is unclear officially how much of Football Radar’s scouting resources are used by Notts, it is certainly a fair assumption to suggest that signings like Ruben Rodrigues, Alassana Jatta and Mai Traore likely wouldn’t have been possible without the company’s extensive network.
The brothers’ success at Meadow Lane can also be partially attributed to the fact that they readily have cash available to go towards improvements to the squad or elsewhere at the club.
According to Company Check, Football Radar had a net worth of over £10million in 2023, a figure which was £4million higher than in 2019, when they first took over at Notts.
It is also worth noting that that figure is unlikely to cover the full extent of the duo's wealth.
Unlike under previous owners, money isn’t thrown around by the club for the sake of it anymore. Seeing Notts pay a fee for a player is becoming an increasingly familiar sight, but only in situations concerning a key target and, crucially, only if that represents good value for money.
While in the lower leagues, the Reedtz brothers are fairly wealthy owners, when you consider their wealth in relation to some of the Football League’s richest clubs, it simply isn’t comparable.
While it is unclear exactly who the EFL’s richest owners are at present, Birmingham City’s takeover has seen them immediately skyrocket into the conversation. Shelby Companies Limited, who are officially controlling shareholders of the Blues, are an asset of Knighthead Capital Management, which has an eye-watering net worth of $9billion.
Tom Wagner, the club’s chairman, also has a $1.6million valuation of his own.
According to figures taken by The Sunderland Echo back in October, Stoke City's owners, the Coates family, are also in with a shout as one of the EFL’s richest, with an eye-watering net worth of £6.7billion.
Leeds United are also likely to be towards the top of the list, with their 49ers ownership clocking in at a net worth of £4.5billion. Meanwhile, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, Stephen Lansdown, Venkys and the Hemmings family (owners of Sunderland, Bristol City, Blackburn and Preston respectively) all boast over £1billion worth of wealth.
Portsmouth’s Michael Eisner, Cardiff’ Vincent Tan and Sheffield Wednesday’s Dejphon Chansiri are also thought to be immensely wealthy.
David Clowes, the chief of nearby Derby County, is estimated to have a net worth of around £350million, while Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, owners of their once National League rivals Wrexham, clock in at around £338million combined.
Even at League Two level, there are some owners who seemingly dwarf the Reedtz brothers’ assets. Bradford City chief Stefan Rupp was estimated to possess a net worth of £100million back in 2020, while Salford City’s The Class of 92 and MK Dons’ Kuwaiti consortium are also not short of cash.
It’s fair to say that while the Magpies' owners will likely be extremely wealthy in comparison to some owners at the lower end of League Two, there are also several across the EFL who simply have another level of wealthy entirely.
