We look at the final six games of West Brom, Blackburn and Coventry as they battle for a play-off place.
Once again, it looks like we could have a tense, exciting and unpredictable end to the Championship.
The race for automatic promotion looks to have four clubs involved, whilst there are still half a dozen who will be nervously looking over their shoulder in fear of getting dragged into the relegation zone.
However, it’s the race for the play-offs that could be the most exciting, as just four points separated sixth-placed West Brom from 13th-placed QPR going into the weekend fixtures.
Given the form of the top four, it seems like just two places are up for grabs.
We’re at the stage of the campaign where every little detail can make a big difference, and the fixture list could be pivotal during the run-in.
With that in mind, we look at the final six fixtures of Blackburn, West Brom and Coventry, to see if any side has an advantage in the battle for a play-off place.
Rovers have a relatively difficult run-in, with three games at home and three away in their final six games.
On paper, a final day game at Sheffield United has the potential to be a mouthwatering clash, as the Blades may be eyeing automatic promotion, whilst Blackburn may need a result to get in the play-offs.
Home games against Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall and Watford look like good opportunities to get points on the board, and Blackburn will no doubt be hoping that the trio are no longer in the mix to reach the play-offs by that stage.
A trip to Kenilworth Road could be problematic given Luton are battling to stay up, and having their last two away games against two of the top four teams is far from ideal, so Blackburn will hope they aren’t playing catch-up by then.
We know the Championship is unpredictable, but as a set of fixtures go, West Brom fans will surely be happy with how they are finishing the season.
The standout game right now appears to be the trip to Coventry, which comes on Good Friday. It has the potential to be decisive at this stage of the campaign, but there’s a lot of football to be played between now and then.
Prior to that, a trip to Bristol City and a home game against Watford could also be important if they are in the mix, so there could be pressure on Tony Mowbray’s side during this period.
Albion’s end to the season is very encouraging on paper, as they play three teams all struggling towards the bottom, and two of those games are at The Hawthorns.
However, the state of play is going to be massive when those fixtures come around. Albion would love to play Derby, Cardiff and Luton when their fate is known, otherwise it could be extremely difficult as both sides battle for points.
Coventry have been flying under Frank Lampard, so they will not fear anyone in the Championship right now.
Whether they can maintain that form remains to be seen, but there’s certainly a lot of quality in the ranks at the Sky Blues.
As above, the game against West Brom is potentially decisive, and the final-day game at home to Middlesbrough may also have a lot on the line.
The other four fixtures come against teams struggling towards the bottom, with three of those coming away from home, which will be tough.
Once more, the state of play when those games come around will be significant, as Lampard would not want to come up against teams who are fighting for their lives to stay in the second tier.
