'Huge coup': Liverpool line up STEAL of the century

Liverpool have started the Premier League season with four wins out of four. The improvements Arne Slot and Richard Hughes made to the squad over the summer transfer window are already bearing fruit - but the club are not standing still.

There are still adjustments to be made over the coming transfer windows - whether that ends up being in January or else next summer.

One area up for discussion is centre-back. Liverpool have kept clean sheets in their last two fixtures - against Arsenal and Burnley - looking largely untroubled at the back.

But there is a little bit of uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate given his contract expires in 2026. And the Anfield club have been heavily linked in recent times with Marc Guehi.

Liverpool could sign Guehi for FREE

In fact the Merseysiders came very close to adding the Crystal Palace captain to the squad on transfer deadline day - but the move fell apart at the 11th hour.

Nonetheless, if and when the 25-year-old decides to leave Selhurst Park, Liverpool will be right there for his signature.

A deal when the January transfer window opens has been mooted - with the Eagles desperate to avoid losing the England international on a free next summer.

But it’s more likely that he runs his deal down and departs as a free agent. Liverpool have put in plenty of groundwork on the deal for Guehi - going so far as to schedule a medical for the central defender on transfer deadline day.

It means the Reds could be considered as favourites for Guehi next summer - according to a report in Football Insider.

That said, the report also admits that the Premier League champions’ inability to wrap up a deal for Guehi last summer means other clubs could well be sniffing around.

Liverpool have done the work

“If Guehi does run down his contract and become a free agent, it could be an open race for him,” the report reads.

“It will depend on who offers him the best deal, and Liverpool right now are still confident that they can land Guehi if he explores his options as a free agent.

“It does seem Liverpool will wait until next summer to try and push through a deal for Guehi having come so close to signing him in the summer before the deal fell through.

“There are clubs across Europe looking at Guehi because the chance to sign a proven Premier League player and England international on a free would be a huge coup.

“It’s an open race as things stand, but Liverpool have done some of the hard work already, and they hope that will give them the edge to get a deal over the line.”
