Blues have obvious problem that must be addressed

Chelsea’s season is in danger of unravelling at a rapid pace after five defeats from six games, but they do sit top of a Premier League table - just not the right one.

Sunday’s 3-0 defeat by Manchester City was a heavy blow to Chelsea’s Champions League qualification hopes, but it also threw up a concerning statistic that will worry supporters but perhaps not surprise them.

Discipline has been a real issue this season, with Chelsea picking up 10 red cards across all competitions. Liam Rosenior’s head coaching predecessor, Enzo Maresca, was also sent off for celebrating Estevao’s late winner against Liverpool in October.

But Chelsea have had a habit of collecting regular yellow cards this term, too. They hold the unwanted title of leading the Premier League for most bookings handed out for dissent.

The City defeat took their tally of dissent-based yellows to 16 for the current top-flight season, more than any other side.

Marc Cucurella picked one up against Pep Guardiola’s title contenders, as did Estevao. The Brazilian’s was particularly frustrating, as he booted the ball away in protest at a free-kick awarded against him by referee Chris Kavanagh.

When Rosenior was hired in January, he repeatedly said that he would not hold a meeting with the Chelsea squad about ill-discipline, despite calls for him to do so.

He has since admitted that he had no option but to go ahead and speak to his players about ways to avoid picking up as many cards, as they began to cost his team dearly.

The last Chelsea player to be sent off was Pedro Neto, whose red card came against Arsenal in last month’s 2-1 Premier League defeat at the Emirates Stadium.
