Liverpool’s new era under Arne Slot continues to build momentum, with two marquee arrivals capturing headlines this summer. Hugo Ekitike, who joined from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £69 million deal, has already made an instant impact. Now he is joined by Alexander Isak, whose £125 million deadline day move from Newcastle United set a new transfer record for the club.
Ekitike’s early form has been remarkable. He became the first Liverpool player since Daniel Sturridge in 2013 to score in his first three matches, finding the net against Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Newcastle. The French forward, now also a senior international, has made no secret of his admiration for his new teammate.
“It’s fun. When you play for the best teams, you expect to be competing with the best players. Isak is a player I’ve watched too, so seeing him arrive is a pleasure,” Ekitike said. “It’s going to be tough competition, but I’m going to focus on performing well so that it’s a problem for the manager.”

The step up to Anfield has been significant for Ekitike. His move has not only raised his profile but also sharpened expectations.
“Obviously my life has changed. It’s a big move and I’m watched a thousand times more but I’m taking it positively, it’s really good. It’s the position I wanted to be in,” he explained. “When you have this kind of standard, you have to show that you belong here and you have to continue to perform. But it’s a position that I like and that I want to keep.”
Under Arne Slot, who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season, competition for places is intense. The Dutch manager has built a squad filled with depth, particularly in attack, where Ekitike and Isak are now expected to push each other to higher levels.
Isak’s transfer has reshaped Liverpool’s front line. At 25, he arrives with proven Premier League pedigree and the profile of a forward capable of leading the attack. His move from Newcastle was the defining story of the summer window, and his arrival ensures Liverpool boast one of Europe’s most dynamic strike forces.
For Ekitike, the challenge is clear. He knows starting opportunities will be earned, not guaranteed, yet he welcomes the rivalry. Slot now has the luxury of rotating two strikers who offer different qualities, giving Liverpool flexibility against any opponent.
Ekitike’s rise has not been confined to Merseyside. During the September international break he made his senior debut for France, coming off the bench in a 2-0 win over Ukraine. It was another sign of his growing status, but also a reminder that competition follows him at every level.
“It’s a real pleasure to be a part of this group of French attackers, knowing their quality,” he reflected. “I’m taking it as a learning experience because they are players who have more experience than me in the national team. We don’t have much time to connect but it’s a real pleasure to be with them. We have to rise to their level.”
For Liverpool supporters, the prospect of Ekitike and Isak developing together under Slot is enticing. One has already delivered a stunning start, the other arrives with a reputation that matches the price tag. Their rivalry, and potential partnership, could shape the next chapter of Liverpool’s attack.
